The Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek – 17 Days is a truly spectacular Himalayan journey...
The Upper Dolpo with Jomsom Trek is one of Nepal’s most remote and rewarding Himalayan adventures, combining the untouched wilderness of Upper Dolpo with the dramatic landscapes of the Mustang region. This extraordinary trekking journey takes you through ancient Tibetan-influenced villages, pristine alpine lakes, high mountain passes, and some of the most isolated valleys in the Himalayas before concluding in Jomsom.
Located in the far-western region of Nepal, Upper Dolpo remained closed to foreign travelers until the late 20th century, preserving its unique culture, traditions, and natural beauty. The trek begins with a flight to the remote Dolpo region and follows ancient trade routes through rugged landscapes, deep canyons, and vast high-altitude plateaus. Along the way, trekkers experience the authentic lifestyle of local communities whose traditions remain deeply connected to Tibetan Buddhism.
One of the major highlights of the trek is the breathtaking Phoksundo Lake, Nepal’s deepest and most spectacular alpine lake. Its crystal-clear turquoise waters, surrounded by towering cliffs and snow-capped peaks, create an unforgettable sight. The trail then continues through remote settlements such as Ringmo, Shey Gompa, Namgung, and Saldang, offering fascinating cultural encounters and visits to centuries-old monasteries.
The trek crosses several challenging high passes, including the renowned Kang La Pass (5,360m) and Jyanta La Pass (5,220m), rewarding trekkers with magnificent panoramic views of the Dhaulagiri, Kanjiroba, and Tibetan Himalayan ranges. The landscapes constantly change from dense pine forests and glacial valleys to barren desert-like terrain that resembles the Tibetan Plateau.
As the journey progresses eastward, the trail enters the Mustang region, where ancient trade routes connect Upper Dolpo with the Kali Gandaki Valley. Trekkers pass through traditional villages, windswept valleys, and dramatic mountain scenery before reaching Jomsom, the administrative center of Mustang and a gateway to the Annapurna region.
The Upper Dolpo with Jomsom Trek is best suited for experienced trekkers seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure. Due to its remote location, high altitude, and limited infrastructure, the trek offers a true wilderness experience rarely found elsewhere in Nepal. In return, travelers are rewarded with untouched natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and a deep sense of exploration.
This remarkable trekking route provides a unique opportunity to discover hidden Himalayan landscapes, ancient Buddhist traditions, and some of Nepal’s most spectacular mountain scenery. For those looking to venture beyond the popular trekking routes, the Upper Dolpo with Jomsom Trek delivers an unforgettable journey into one of the last truly remote regions of the Himalayas.
