The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is one of the most popular and rewarding short treks in...
The Mardi Himal Trek is one of the most beautiful and underrated trekking experiences in the Annapurna region of Nepal. It offers a perfect combination of close-up Himalayan views, peaceful forest trails, and rich cultural encounters. Located beneath the iconic Machhapuchhre (6,993 m), also known as the “Fishtail” mountain, Mardi Himal (5,587 m) provides breathtaking scenery that feels incredibly close throughout the journey. This trek is ideal for travelers looking for a quieter alternative to the busier routes while still enjoying world-class mountain landscapes.
The adventure usually begins around 1,756 m and gradually ascends through lush rhododendron and bamboo forests toward Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500 m), the highest trekking point. One of the major advantages of this route is its gentle altitude gain, with overnight stays below 3,500 m, meaning no extra acclimatization days are required. This makes it suitable even for beginners and first-time trekkers.
As you climb higher, the scenery changes dramatically from dense forests to open ridgelines with stunning Himalayan panoramas. Trekkers are rewarded with magnificent views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna, Dhaulagiri, and the entire Annapurna Massif (I–IV). The most unforgettable experience is walking along narrow ridges with Machhapuchhre rising dramatically in front of you. Every morning brings a magical sunrise, painting the snow-covered peaks in golden light.
The Mardi Himal trail is also known for its peaceful environment. With fewer trekkers and small teahouses located at designated stops, the route offers a quiet and immersive experience in nature. Well-marked trails guide you through forests, alpine meadows, and high pastures, allowing you to fully connect with the Himalayan landscape. Wildlife sightings such as Himalayan Monal (Danphe), Kalij pheasants, and even yaks above 3,000 m add to the natural charm of the trek.
Culturally, the route passes through traditional Gurung and Tamang villages, where trekkers can experience authentic local lifestyles, terraced farming, and warm Himalayan hospitality. The descent via Sidhing village adds cultural richness with scenic farmlands, waterfalls, and traditional settlements before the trek ends near Lumre.
Overall, the Mardi Himal Trek is a perfect short Himalayan adventure of 10–11 days, ideal for those seeking natural beauty, peaceful trails, and close mountain views without large crowds. It is truly a hidden gem of the Annapurna region and offers an unforgettable trekking experience in Nepal.
