Mustang Overland Tour by 4WD Jeep: Upper Mustang Road Trip

Mustang Overland Tour- 12 Days

The Mustang Overland Tour by 4WD Jeep is the ultimate adventure for travelers who want to experience the raw grandeur of the trans-Himalayan region without the physical demands of long-distance trekking. Specially designed by Sherpa Himalaya, this action-packed safari package makes the isolated, pristine lands of both Lower and Upper Mustang fully accessible to all types of adventurers, including families and those with limited time. Standing on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau, this overland journey offers a comfortable yet thrilling alternative to explore one of the world’s last untouched socio-cultural and geographic frontiers.

Your journey kicks off from the lakeside city of Pokhara, transitioning from smooth pavement to rugged, winding mountain roads as you pass Beni. From here, the true off-road safari begins as your 4WD cruiser kicks up dust along the base of the dramatic Kali Gandaki Gorge—the deepest gorge on Earth. As the jeep navigates barren valleys and climbs windswept mountain passes, you are treated to jaw-dropping views of Dhaulagiri (8,167 m) and the Annapurna Massif towering directly overhead. This incredible contrast between the sun-baked, desert canyon floor and the colossal, snow-capped walls of white mountain ice makes every twist of the road a paradise for photography.

The landscape changes dramatically as you push past the roaring riverbeds into the rain shadow of Upper Mustang, revealing a stark, semi-arid wilderness painted in shifting shades of ochre, grey, and deep crimson cliffs. Along the route, you will uncover historically rich archaeological sites, including the enigmatic, thousands-of-years-old Mustang Sky Caves carved impossibly high into vertical rock faces. The trail is beautifully interrupted by vibrant desert oases like Marpha, famous for its stone-built houses and sprawling apple orchards, before the rugged terrain finally gives way to the ultimate destination of the tour.

The crown jewel of this overland expedition is the ancient walled city of Lo Manthang, the medieval capital of the former Kingdom of Lo. Surrounded by massive 15th-century earthen walls, this living museum allows you to explore century-old Tibetan Buddhist traditions completely frozen in time. You will have ample time to wander through narrow flagstone alleys, visit the historic Royal Palace, and step inside active monasteries like Ghar Gompa and Thubchen Lhakhang, which house priceless collections of ancient murals. After fully immersing yourself in this deeply spiritual and mysterious high-altitude desert, your cruiser will safely trace the same scenic route back, concluding an unforgettable Himalayan road trip.
